In January 2007, then-U.S. Sen. Joe Biden said of fellow Sen. Barack Obama, "I mean, you got the first sort of mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."
Of course he was including his good friend, Rep. James E. Clyburn, as among those who were not "mainstream ... articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."
Presumably, he was also including every Black American he had ever met prior to 2007 as not "mainstream ... articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."
Shameful, no?
As an aside, imagine how often you would have heard that repeated earlier this year if Donald Trump had said it in 2007?

Barack Obama's father was a Kenyan, who went back to Kenya while his son was very young. Barack Obama's mother was white, and he was raised by her, and lived with her white family after she died.
Donald Jasper Harris, Kamala Harris' father, is a mixed-race Jamaican; he divorced his wife while Kamala Harris was still a child. He is alive, but did not attend her inauguration as Vice President in 2021, and has reportedly retired to his native Jamaica after a successful academic career in the United States (it is unclear as to whether or not he ever became a U.S. Citizen). Harris's mother was an Indian from the country of India (her Naturalization as a U.S. citizen is a matter of public record).
By the way, have you ever heard of a living parent of a U.S. Presidential candidate who was not sought out by the press for comment or an interview? Well, now you have!
Most people think the media is Democrat heavy; well, who do they hire?
Faith Abubey, ABC News -- born in Ghana; ZERO American Black ancestry
Yamiche Alcindor, PBS -- both parents from Haiti; ZERO % American Black
Joy Reid, MSNBC -- dad from Congo, mom from Guyana; also no connection with the discriminated against descendants of American slaves
Note also that this is very recent trend/backlash. In the old days networks hired Max Robinson, Gail King, Carl Rowan, Jim Vance, Oprah Winfrey, Carl Stokes, etc. -- American Blacks descended from Black American slaves, and of great talent; their talent was recognized -- but do liberals allow that today?
We see Biden's quote above, which may well reveal how liberals think privately (old age filter of speaking whatever you think, perhaps?).

What would Harvard have had to do to augment their Affirmative Action numbers by recruiting a Black student who was not at all a descendent of American Black slaves but was from Denver, Colorado, and who did not even apply there, but whom they sought out to ask to apply? Well, essentially, to get there they'd rather literally have to pass over MILLIONS OF BLACK AMERICANS DESCENDED FROM AMERICAN SLAVES, whom everyone THOUGHT Affirmative Action was supposed to help -- they'd more or less have to fly over (AND, THUS, REJECT) virtually every descendant of American Slaves who could be helped by Affirmative Action in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Akron, Chicago, St. Louis, etc., etc., not to mention all the cities and suburbs closer to Harvard than Denver, including in the deep south, and in locales that were poorer (like Third Ward, Houston) and more Black than Denver (like Compton, California) that are a bit further away from Harvard than Denver (which was only about 10% Black, so probably felt "safer" to the Harvard recruiters). Was Joy Reid really smarter than every Black high school senior in Boston who was a poor descendant of American slaves? Maybe, but maybe not!
